The nickname comes from a chirping, staccato violin figure in the Sanctus. The quick, pecking repeated notes in that movement are what evoke the sound of sparrows chattering.

The choir of St John the Evangelist will be accompanied by a small, professional orchestra of strings, trumpets, and drums, conducted by Paul Grimwood.. Also being sung are Alma Dei creatoris, K 277, and Tantum ergo, K 197.

The Mass will be presented as a service for the Feast of the Visitation of the Blessed Virgin, as it may have been sung at the time, with short orchestral selections as well. Soloists for the Sparrow Mass will be Beverly Bronté-Tinkew, soprano; Mari van Pelt, alto; Timothy Lo, tenor and Tom Fleming, bass. The Rector of St John’s, The Rev. Andrew Rampton, will preside.

There is no charge for admission, but a free-will offering will be received. Incense may be used.
