In the last couple of months there have been a few attempts by scammers to impersonate leadership from St John’s. This usually involves fake email addresses and messages that are an effort to persuade parishioners to share personal information. If one is caught in these scams, at best, they produce even more junk mail. At worst, they can result in identity theft and financial fraud. Not something any of us need to experience.

The parish’s insurance provider has a document about managing online risks that you can access here.

The federal government has several resources dedicated to identifying and avoiding online fraud attempts. The recent attempts on St John’s parishioners are called phishing, which you can learn more about through the Get Cyber Safe program and the Anti-Fraud Centre.

If you ever have a question about an email from someone related to the church, you can always call to verify and clarify. Stay safe online, everyone!
