Over the past decade, this parish has sponsored three refugee families, raising funds as well as providing hands-on assistance during their first year in Canada. This unique way of loving our neighbour has changed many lives and created some special relationships.
St John’s has an opportunity to sponsor a family relating to our 2024 sponsorship of an Afghan family. They are the parents and three teenaged siblings of their close friend, a single mother. The sponsorship is being facilitated by the Diocese of Niagara, and it will be several years before the family actually arrives.
Some funds will be required at the time of application, likely in a few months, and our partner Taskforce NYX is already successfully fundraising.
Please keep this sponsorship in mind as you come across fundraising opportunities or should be in conversation with friends who might like to support this initiative. Personally, for example, I am asking family and friends to donate to this cause in lieu of gifts for my upcoming birthday. Donations are accepted by e-transfer, cheque, credit card and should be marked “parish refugee fund.”
If you would like to know more details or are looking to make a special gift, don’t hesitate to reach out to me, our Rector, Andrew Rampton, or a member of Corporation for more information.
