As a way of including these young ones, we have experimented with a small children’s area in the north-west corner of the church. The next time you come to church you will see that we are now experimenting with a new area in the body of the church. By reclaiming seating space in other areas we are able to offer this space without the loss of seating capacity.

As part of becoming a child and parent-friendly church we are also planning to provide audio of our worship services in both the foyer and the nursery so that the needs of children and parents are accommodated . All of this is part of our practice of hospitality and welcoming, welcoming others as Christ has welcomed us.

Juanita Maldonado to Conclude Ministry on April 14

<itunes:author>David Anderson</itunes:author>

The wardens and rector of SJE are disappointed to have to pass along the information that Juanita Maldonado has decided to leave her ministry position effective April 15.

The churches want to tell the city's decision-makers that a casino in downtown Hamilton is inconsistent with the vision we have of a city that is growing, vibrant, healthy, just and caring.

The churches also reminded our civic leaders that their first responsibility is toward the most vulnerable who live in our city. The social consequences of a casino located in downtown Hamilton would be devestating to many individuals and families.

The message, which was presented by Fr. David Anderson, who brought this coalition together, was generally well-received by members of council.

In the end, however, the council vote left the door open to a potential downtown sight. Councillor McHattie observed that the downtown had been "thrown under the bus."

Rector to be Installed as Canon at Christ's Church Cathedral

<itunes:author>Webservant</itunes:author>

The Rev. Anderson, is joining Bishop Michael Bird, in recommending Mary Jo Leddy's book, The Other Face of God, for Lenten reading this year.

Mary Jo Leddy is the founder of Romero House in Toronto. She has a Ph.D. in Philosophy and serves as a senior fellow at Massy College, University of Toronto. Her many books include Radical Gratitude. In this soulbook, Leddy makes a convincing case that today's refugees are serving as urban spiritual teachers. She calls them "the other face of God." Leddy speaks to the warps in our society when borders are becoming walls and strangers, like the one in the biblical parable of the Good Samaritan, are being ignored or harassed. For Leddy the church must stand apart from the larger culture and heed the call of the newcomers and learn from them what we have forgotten about justice, human rights, respect, and inclusivity.

The Rector will have a small quantity of these books for sale in the coming weeks; the cost is $20 and includes a small gift to the Rector's Discretionary Fund, which allows the Rector to respond to particular needs in the community.

Christianity 201: Going Deeper in the Practices of the Faith

<itunes:author>Webservant</itunes:author>

Going Deeper in the Christian Practices

On Friday, June 3, before our group left for Charleston, a large tropical storm moved through West Virginia creating great havoc in its wake. Millions of people were left without power in West Virginia and neighbouring states. President Barak Obama declared an emergency in West Virginia as the state governor also declared a state-wide emergeny that remained in effect all week.

Fortuneately, the site where our youth were housed in Charleston was with power and the St John's youth were able to assist in this time of emergency.

helping to clear away debris;

assisting in emgency shelters;

caring for the elderly and infirm in nursing homes at a time when families were most unlikely to visit;

caring for at-risk youth.

We wish to thank everyone for their prayers and support during this time of service.

Musical Director Sought for Discovery Service

<itunes:author>Webservant</itunes:author>

St John the Evangelist, a mission focused Anglican church in the vibrant Locke Street area of SW Hamilton, requires a part-time music director for its evolving Sunday morning contemporary worship service.
