St. John’s is Blooming!

Spring has definitely come to St. John’s church. Make sure you don’t miss the spirea bushes by the crypt door – their bloom is spectacular this year. And the hedge has undergone a major pruning to allow for much needed rejuvenation. Members of the community walking by have been amazed at the positive change this makes and have been pleased to be able to enjoy our Bridal Veil spirea bushes and other signs of the season. Parish Leadership Caucus and Annual Calendar Planning Meeting

The date for our Parish Leadership Caucus and Celebration and Annual Calendar Planning Meeting is set now for Tuesday, June 19, 6:00 PM with dinner served at 6:30 PM. This meeting is a time for negotiating the calendar for the upcoming ministry season, so ministry leaders and others are encourage to plan ahead. The evening normally includes discussion on a topic of interest to all leaders. Please r.s.v.p. to David Anderson.

Messy Church. Everyone agreed that the recent workshop on Messy Church had been a great success. It was agreed that Parish Council support the launch of this ministry in the fall.

Renovation of the Crypt. A plan for the renovation of the Crypt to allow for more flexible use of that space, especially as a coffee time space between Sunday services was approved. The plan calls for the opening of the space to the north classrooms, not removing the walls, but opening them to the main space. Costs are expected to be minimal.

Fr. David and Continuing Education. Parish Council supported David's plan to enrol in a five-year Doctor of Ministry (D.Min.) program in Congregational Mission and Leadership at Luther Seminary in St Paul, Minnesota. David also has the support of the Parish Corporation and as well as Bishop Michael. David will be spending his annual study leave with one week residencies in St Paul during July and January as well as part time study during the during the year.

Parish finances. The treasurer reported that to the end of March 2011 operating income had exceeded expenses at a rate better than budgeted. We hope that the trend continues. Thank you for your continuing generous support.

Parish News for Sunday, April 15

The Parish News for Sunday, April 15 is available here.

New Series of Talks for Sundays of Easter

Parish News for Sunday, April 8, 2012

The Parish News for Sunday, April 8 is available here.

Rector to Preach at Special Evensong at Cathedral

Bishop Michael has designated Sunday, April 29 as Sea Sunday across the Diocese of Niagara.

Presentations: What We've Learned About Neighourhood and What Other Churches are Doing to Reach Out

There were two presentations at our recent Mission's Lunch. First, Sarah Wayland presented the finding of our SWANS research. SWANS stands for the South-West Area Neighbourhood Scan. This was a research project by neighbourhood churches, including St John's, that looked at the needs of our neighbourhood. A number of specific needs were identified, especially in terms of community-building and the needs of isolated seniors and young families.

The second presentation, by Andy and Sue Kalbfliesh, told the story of churches in southern-Ontario that have planted fresh expressions of church in their neighbourhoods in order to meet the needs of their community. We heard the story of a church in another diocese which began a service for skateboarders, in response to the needs of they young people in their community. The skateboarder have become a Christian community, praying together, growing in discipleship and offering their skateboarding as an act of worship.

We also heard the story of "The Church on Tap" a church with meets once a month in a local pub in Port Colborne. This ministry of the parish of St Brendan and St James meets the needs of people who for whatever reason are not comfortable with more traditional forms of church. The worship experience is highly interactive, but designed to create a place of belonging and Christian discipleship.

Finally we heard the story of "Messy Church" a congregation of the parish of St George, Georgetown. Messy Church is an opportunity for families to worship together in a way that engages adults and children together. Messy Church begins when you arrive, so that familes never have to worry about being late. Worship begins with an activity, often a craft or game, that people join in as they arrive. The activities are always connected with the theme of the day. There will be a short talk that engages the entire community and some singing. The evening concludes with a meal shared together.

Messy Church Workshop Announced

Andy and Sue had recently made a presentation to Parish Council regarding Messy Church. Parish Council, already equipped with the SWANS report, saw that Messy Church may be a real opportunity for our neighbourhood here at St John's.

A Messy Church Workshop, an opportunity to experience a Messy Church, to learn about Messy Church, to gather resources, and to explore the history of this innovative way of being church in a changing world, will be held at St John's on Friday, April 13, 5:30 to 7:30 p.m.

Evening format...

5:30, Group Activities

6:15 Worship

6:30 Supper

7:00 Presentations

If you have any questions please contact Sue or Andy at 905-648-0302 or ask@nas.net. Sign up to attend by email at events@rockonlocke.ca or sign the list at the back of the church.
